The Author
Raised in Eastern Kentucky, Lee Murphy knows firsthand what it means to grow up with very little. Appalachian poverty was not an abstraction — it was the view from his front porch. From an early age, he understood that education was the road out, and he took it seriously. That drive carried him through Eastern Kentucky University and on to the University of Kentucky, where he earned a master’s degree in Political Science from the prestigious Patterson School. It was a long way from the farm, and he earned every step of it.
After graduating, Lee and high school friend Kevin Boneta co-founded Madison County’s first high-speed ISP after discovering no local providers existed. Their venture earned them the 1999 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in Technology Award. What started as two friends solving a local problem grew into a nationwide carrier. After years of sleeping under their desks to keep a growing network alive, the stress had taken its toll. Lee and Kevin wanted something they had almost forgotten — fun. The company was sold, and they walked away having built something that mattered.
Lee transitioned into public service, providing consulting and policy expertise for several government agencies, before moving into political activism with Sweetwater Policy Associates, championing social justice and grassroots advocacy.
His debut novel, Shadows of Deception, is a paranormal thriller set in Richmond, Kentucky, weaving local history into a chilling tale of secrets and danger. A lover of dogs, music, and humor, Lee values resilience and the strength of community. When he isn’t writing, he is likely outdoors with his dogs or enjoying the company of those who have shared his journey.
